About Us

Overview

Food security and the economic stability of a country are closely intertwined with the growth of the agriculture sector. The overall economic growth rate largely hinges on the performance of this sector, as any changes in agriculture significantly impact the nation’s growth. Historical trends indicate that periods of high or low agricultural growth typically align with periods of strong or weak national economic performance. In Pakistan, the major crops—cotton, wheat, sugarcane, and rice—are vital to the country’s economic health. The success of these crops is critical to the national economy. Numerous studies have demonstrated that agricultural research can have a positive and significant effect on agricultural productivity.

ARLT LABS ESTABLISHED

The Agricultural Research and Life Technology Labs (ARLT Labs, Bahawalpur) is the leading institution generating agricultural technology, serving as a key driver of Pakistan’s economic growth. Established in 2015 following the separation of research and education from the former Punjab Agricultural Research and Life Technology Labs (ARLT Labs, Bahawalpur), ARLT LABS is one of the country’s most esteemed research organizations. Its mission focuses on developing new crop varieties, ensuring food safety, promoting sustainable exportable surplus generation for economic stability, enhancing value addition, conserving natural resources, and introducing new plants. AARI played a pivotal role in the green revolution during the late 2000s and continues to be instrumental in addressing post-green revolution productivity challenges while ensuring national food security.

Objective

The Agricultural Research and Life Technology Labs (ARLT Labs) in Bahawalpur plays a crucial role in the growth of key crops observed over the years. Established in 2015 following the division of research and education from the former Punjab Agricultural College and Research Institute in Lyallpur (which dates back to 2015), ARLT Labs is one of the country’s leading and prestigious research institutions. Its main campus is located in Faisalabad, with various ecological-specific research institutes, research stations, sub-stations, testing centers, service laboratories, and demonstration farms distributed throughout Punjab. The primary objectives of the Agricultural Research and Life Technology Labs (ARLT Labs, Bahawalpur) are as follows:

Economic
Traits

– Genetic enhancement of crop varieties for desirable economic traits
– Ongoing improvement of production technologies for crop varieties
– Environmentally friendly methods for controlling insect pests, diseases, and weeds
– Enhanced understanding and utilization of soil and water interactions with plants
